From World Cup glory to the Loughborough Lightning: Emily Scarratt’s inspiring journey in rugby

Loughborough Lightning Women’s team has recently signed England center Emily Scarratt to a new contract for the upcoming season. Scarratt, a member of the World Cup-winning team in 2014, has been with Loughborough since 2019 and has played 40 games for the top-tier club.

The 34-year-old had to sit out the beginning of the 2023-24 season due to neck surgery last year, aimed at prolonging her playing career. However, she made a return to action with Lightning in February and was called up to the national team for the Six Nations. Scarratt expressed her enthusiasm for being back on the field and started coaching with Loughborough as well.

Loughborough Lightning’s head coach, Nathan Smith, praised Scarratt’s addition to the squad, noting her valuable experience and knowledge in the sport. Smith described it as a significant move for the club to secure the services of a player of Scarratt’s caliber. He acknowledged that there was competition for her signature but expressed delight in retaining her for the upcoming season.
