From Volunteer to Advocate: Meet the FGCU Grad Using Psychology Degree to Spread Mental Health Awareness

Alum advocating for mental health empowerment through sharing personal experiences

Maguire has always had a passion for helping others, especially those struggling with mental health. This led her to pursue a psychology degree and eventually become an advocate for mental health. She started working with Kids Minds Matter as a volunteer while earning her associate’s degree at Florida SouthWestern, which she completed in 2020.

As a behavioral health intern at FGCU, Maguire helped organize events aimed at spreading awareness and knowledge about mental health. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2022. Her intention is to leverage her degree as a foundation for her advocacy work. Before college, she was unaware that being a mental health advocate was an option, but now she aims to utilize her degree to offer mental health education and share her academic knowledge and personal experiences with mental health to support others on their own journeys.
