From Underdog to Valuable Asset: The Unlikely Duo of Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan

The 49ers’ QB-Coach Duo Ranked 9th Best in NFL by Sports Illustrated

In a recent ranking by Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame, the quarterback-coach combination of Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers was placed ninth among all 32 teams in the NFL. Purdy was ranked as the 15th-best quarterback and Shanahan as the sixth-best head coach individually.

According to Verderame, Purdy’s ranking reflects his performance, while also mentioning that the 49ers will soon have to make a decision on extending his contract after the 2024 season. On the other hand, Shanahan is still aiming to win a Super Bowl, the only achievement that has eluded him in his career as an offensive coordinator and head coach.

Despite Shanahan being seen as the more experienced and accomplished of the two, Purdy has shown significant talent and potential, as he was the highest-rated quarterback in the NFL last season. Purdy’s performance has been crucial for the 49ers, especially in big games like the Super Bowl, where he outshone Shanahan despite the team’s loss.

Verderame notes that while Shanahan’s coaching abilities are undeniable, it is clear that Purdy’s contributions on the field have been instrumental to the team’s success. Without Purdy, Shanahan’s coaching decisions may have been more heavily scrutinized, especially considering some questionable choices made in crucial moments. Ultimately, Purdy’s impact on the team’s success cannot be understated.
