In October 1991, a conflict backstage at the St. Petersburg Yubileiny Sports Palace between Igor Malakhov’s representative and Igor Talkov’s concert director Valery Shlyafman resulted in Talkov’s death. Shlyafman, who fled to Israel in 1992 and changed his name, was originally accused of negligent homicide but has now been charged with murder and attempted murder in a generally dangerous manner.
The Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee for St. Petersburg concluded the investigation into Talkov’s murder in 2021, determining that Shlyafman was involved in intentional crimes. Talkov rose to fame after performing at the Song of the Year festival in 1987. The case was originally suspended in 1993 and reopened in November 2018.
