From Tragedy to Action: Las Cruces Businesses Band Together to Combat Crime

Las Cruces Business Owners Collaborate to Address Crime and Enhance Safety in the Community

Las Cruces is a city in New Mexico that has been plagued by issues such as crime, homelessness, and property destruction. This prompted two local business owners, Vic Villalobos and Donna Stryker, to form Businesses For a Safer Las Cruces. With their combined experience of 33 years as business owners, they saw the need to take action and address these problems head-on.

One incident that particularly stood out was the death of LCPD officer Jonah Hernandez on the corner of Villalobos’ property. This tragedy highlighted the seriousness of the crime problem in Las Cruces and prompted Villalobos and Stryker to start talking to other business owners in the area. They discovered that issues such as trespassing, assaults, break-ins, and vandalism were all too common.

As a result of their efforts, Businesses For a Safer Las Cruces now meets regularly at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum and has a list of businesses that support law enforcement by providing discounts and rest areas. The organization also has a Facebook group where the community can join to stay connected and informed about their efforts to combat crime in the area.
