From Slights to Success: Luka Doncic’s Journey from Draft Snub to NBA Finals Leader

NBA executive draws parallels between Ayton over Doncic and Bowie over Jordan

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks is currently leading his team to the NBA Finals after a 36-point performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves. This victory has similarities to how the Mavericks defeated the Phoenix Suns in the conference semifinals two years prior. The history of Doncic’s relationship with the Suns dates back to when Phoenix chose to draft Deandre Ayton over him in 2018, despite having recently hired Doncic’s national team coach. This decision was heavily criticized by many in the NBA community.

In comparison, an anonymous team executive and a rival executive have drawn parallels between Ayton’s selection over Doncic and other teams from the 2018 draft who have regretted their decisions. For example, the Sacramento Kings chose Marvin Bagley as their second pick, while the Atlanta Hawks traded Doncic for Trae Young after selecting him third. Despite Ayton’s solid play and contribution to Phoenix’s 2021 NBA Finals appearance, his performance has been inconsistent at times and he was eventually traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

On the other hand, Doncic has continued to excel and achieved career-high averages in points, assists, and rebounds this season. At just 25 years old, Doncic is a key player for the Mavericks as they head into the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics.
