From Saturday Work to Remote Work: Flanders’ Shift in Working Arrangements over the Past Decade

Flemish Individuals Frequently Work Evenings, Sundays, and Shifts

Over the past decade, Flanders has seen a significant increase in the number of workers engaging in flexible working arrangements such as evening work, night work, shift work, and working from home. The only form of work that has decreased slightly is Saturday work, according to data from Statistics Flanders. Working from home has become the most popular form of flexible working, with 39.6 percent of workers in Flanders doing it at least occasionally in 2023, almost double compared to 2013.

This trend has become more pronounced, particularly since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, ten years ago, Saturday work was the most common flexible form of work among Flemish workers, with 21.8 percent occasionally working two Saturdays a month. By 2023, this figure had dropped to 20.8 percent. However, there has been an increase in other forms of atypical working time arrangements such as shift work and evening/night work. Shift work has risen from 8 percent in 2013 to 13.9 percent in 2023 while evening/night work accounts for 12.3 percent and Sunday work for another 12.3 percent.

It’s worth noting that men are more likely than women to engage in evening and night work as well as shift work. However, when it comes to weekend work, the distribution is roughly equal between men and women with women slightly more likely to take advantage of remote working options like working from home.

On a different note, there are numerous discussions and forums available online for those interested in exploring various topics such as slot games and betting strategies.

In conclusion, over the past decade Flanders has seen an increase in flexibility when it comes to working arrangements with more people choosing to take advantage of remote working options like working from home or shifting their schedules around due to personal or professional reasons while others opted for traditional weekend schedules on Saturdays and Sundays or even taking on extra hours during weekdays by engaging in shift or evening/night jobs.
