From Sacrificial Lamb to Advocate: Rory McIlroy’s Evolution on Saudi-Backed Golf League

Rory McIlroy Regrets Being So Invested in Tour-LIV Split

In the previous year’s RBC Canadian Open, Rory McIlroy expressed his feelings of being a “sacrificial lamb” due to the PGA Tour’s framework agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Over the past 12 months, McIlroy has only grown stronger in his conviction on the topic.

At Hamilton Golf & Country Club, McIlroy shared his current views, stating that he wishes he hadn’t gotten as deeply involved in the situation. Despite his disappointment, he holds no grudges against those who chose to play in the Saudi-backed league known as LIV Golf.

Before the framework agreement, McIlroy was critical of LIV Golf and the disruption caused by the Saudi-backed league. However, his stance has shifted towards advocating for a deal with the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The golfer highlighted his concerns about the divide in men’s professional golf and expressed hopes for a resolution to bring things back together.

McIlroy, a two-time Canadian Open champion, emphasized his regret about getting deeply involved in the matter. He was recently appointed to lead negotiations on a daily basis and is hopeful that talks towards a potential agreement with PIF will be successful. Tour commissioner Jay Monahan joining him during his pro-am round on Wednesday was seen as significant, indicating that ongoing talks are taking place between both parties.
