From Rescue to Glory: Ugly but Adorable Dog Wins Top Prize at World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

Oregon Pekingese wins title of World’s Ugliest Dog

The annual World’s Ugliest Dog contest takes place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, where dogs are judged based on their unique appearance. This year, an 8-year-old Pekingese named Wild Thang from Oregon won first place. Known for his lolling tongue and unruly fur, Wild Thang took home a $5,000 prize with his owner Ann Lewis of North Bend. Despite finishing second in the competition three times before, Wild Thang finally claimed the top spot this year.

Fiona Ma, California State Treasurer and one of the judges, praised Wild Thang’s efforts in the contest and said that he was a fan favorite due to his repeated appearances. Wild Thang was raised in Los Angeles before moving to Oregon and contracted distemper as a puppy from a rescue foster, causing his tongue to stick out. However, his owner claims he is healthy and happy despite this setback.

The World’s Ugliest Dog contest has been a tradition at the fair for nearly 50 years with the goal of promoting the adoption of dogs from shelters especially senior dogs. Second place went to Rome, a wheelchair-bound pug while third place was awarded to Daisy May, a mixed breed rescue dog.

To claim their prizes for the contest, Lewis had to give an exclusive first interview to NBC’s “Today” show on Monday morning. Fans can look forward to seeing them on TV soon!
