From RB2 to RB1: Zamir White Embraces New Role as Lead Back for the Raiders in 2021

Zamir White takes on new role as top running back for the Raiders

In the final weeks of last season, Raiders running back Zamir White was given the opportunity to shine when Josh Jacobs was sidelined with an injury. White seized this chance and performed exceptionally well in those four games, rushing for 397 yards with an average of 4.7 yards per carry. His standout performance came during Las Vegas’ Christmas Day victory over Kansas City, where he rushed for a remarkable 145 yards. Additionally, White caught nine passes for 60 yards during that time.

Despite his impressive performance, White does not view last season as a foundation for this year, especially now that he has been named the lead back following Jacobs’ departure in free agency. White expressed gratitude for being given the RB1 designation and acknowledged the hard work he has put in since his first year with the team. He emphasized the importance of having fun during OTAs and adapting to the new team style. Furthermore, White is embracing his role as a more vocal leader as the team’s top back, transitioning from his previous quieter contribution.

Teammate Alexander Mattison, who signed as a free agent, commended White for taking on his new role with dedication and enthusiasm. Mattison noted that White has stepped up as a leader and that the running back room is excited for the upcoming season. Throughout his career, White has recorded 521 rushing yards, one touchdown, and 15 receptions for 98 yards in 31 games.
