From QB to WR: The Packers Take a Chance on Alex McGough’s Athleticism

Packers transition Alex McGough from quarterback to wide receiver

The Packers recently announced a major change in their roster by moving Alex McGough from quarterback to wide receiver. At 28 years old, McGough spent the last season on the team’s practice squad as the third quarterback behind Jordan Love and Sean Clifford. Packers coach Matt LaFleur praised McGough’s athleticism, mentioning his experience running receiver routes on the scout team.

LaFleur saw potential in McGough’s talent and decided to give him a chance at the wide receiver position. Despite selecting Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt in the seventh round, the Packers did not draft a receiver or sign one in free agency. The wide receiver room is already crowded, with McGough joining a group that includes Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton, Malik Heath, Samori Toure, Grant DuBose, and Thyrick Pitts.

McGough has never played in an NFL regular-season game before but could contribute on special teams while also making his mark at wide receiver. With so many talented receivers on the roster, it will be interesting to see how McGough fares in this new role.
