From Paralyzed to Recovered: The Power of Plasma Exchange in Combatting Guillain Barre Syndrome

Plasma exchange rescues individuals suffering from complete body paralysis.

A man in Quang Ngai, Vietnam, experienced complete paralysis due to Guillain Barre syndrome but recovered after undergoing 6 plasma exchanges. Mr. Truong Quang Quyt, a 50-year-old man, was admitted to the emergency room at Quang Ngai Provincial General Hospital with symptoms of paralysis, loss of feeling in his body, difficulty talking, and swallowing on March 27. His condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a diagnosis of Guillain Barre syndrome.

Guillain Barre syndrome is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks nerves, causing muscle paralysis. Recognizing the risk of respiratory muscle paralysis being the most dangerous complication, doctors prescribed plasma exchange for Mr. Quyt. After 6 treatments, his health began to stabilize and he is now able to speak and move lightly with plans to be discharged soon.

Dr. Tran Khac Vinh, Head of the Department of Intensive Care – Poison Control at the hospital highlighted Mr. Quyt’s case as unique due to the rapid progression of the disease. Plasma exchange is an optimal treatment that prevents respiratory paralysis and improves recovery for patients with autoimmune diseases like Guillain Barre syndrome.

Recent advancements in plasma exchange have allowed hospitals worldwide to successfully treat various autoimmune diseases and disorders. Guillain-Barre Syndrome affects around 0.8-1.9 cases per 100,000 people worldwide annually and can cause symptoms such as numbness in the limbs, difficulty with movements and speech and rapid progression to complete paralysis .
