From Olympic Gold to NFL: How Gable Steveson’s Unique Athletic Background Could Help Fill the Bills’ Defensive Gaps

The Buffalo Bills have undergone significant changes this offseason, parting ways with many key players on both offense and defense. One of the most notable departures was Stefon Diggs on the offensive side, while on defense, they lost Tre’Davious White, Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Leonard Floyd, and Jordan Phillips.

In an effort to fill these gaps, the Bills made several additions, including the signing of former Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson to a three-year rookie contract. Steveson wrestled at the University of Minnesota and is a two-time winner of the Dan Hodge Trophy. He won gold in freestyle wrestling at the 2020 Summer Olympics and was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year in 2022.

Steveson’s athletic background could make him a valuable addition to the team. At 6-1 and 275 pounds, he may be considered undersized for an interior defensive lineman. However, his wrestling experience could provide him with the necessary skills to excel in this role. Steveson expressed his excitement for this new challenge and thanked Coach Sean McDermott, general manager Brandon Beane, and the Buffalo Bills organization for giving him this opportunity. While it may be a long shot, if Steveson can become even a rotational contributor for the Bills
