Protests Erupt Across France Against National Group

Unions and civil organizations representing France’s main groups have gathered in Place de la République, Paris to protest the rise of the far-right following the victory of the National Rally in European elections last weekend. Over 200 demonstrations are planned throughout France with an estimated 300,000 to 350,00 people expected to participate, including up to 100,00 in Paris.

In response to the far-right victory, French President Emmanuel Macron called for early legislative elections. Despite the challenges this move has caused in the French political landscape, unions and organizations remain committed to participating in upcoming elections.

Cécile Duflot, general director of Oxfam France expressed concern about the potential consequences of the far-right victory. She argued that their rhetoric is a “scam” based on racism and urged people to get out of denial. The protests aim to raise awareness about the dangers of such political discourse.
