From Factory Favorites to Privateer Prodigies: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Thrills and Challenges of Downhill Mountain Biking at Fort William World Cup

15 Privateer Bikes Competing at Fort William World Cup 2024

During a visit to the Fort William World Cup pits, we were able to witness the cutting-edge bikes and technology used by the world’s fastest downhill mountain bikers. Factory team riders such as Greg Minnaar, Tahnee Seagrave, Nina Hoffmann, and others have access to top-notch resources including dedicated mechanics, team managers, chefs to ensure proper nutrition, and sports massage therapists. These riders also have spare bikes on hand for quick replacements if needed.

On the other hand, there are approximately 80 privateers at the event who take on all of these responsibilities while also striving to race down Aonach Mòr as quickly as possible. Despite not having access to the latest technology or resources, many of their bikes have accumulated more kilometers of descent than those of factory team riders. We took a closer look at the hardworking privateers of Fort William and learned about their love for their bikes.
