From Disappointment to Draft Delight: How Cason Wallace Found Success in Oklahoma City

Cason Wallace playfully regrets his past negative view of OKC

Cason Wallace was initially disappointed that he landed in Oklahoma City instead of Dallas through a trade, but he quickly adapted to his new surroundings. Despite his initial reservations, Wallace found that the lack of distractions in Oklahoma allowed him to stay focused on his game, resulting in a successful rookie season with the Thunder.

Wallace became a key part of the Thunder’s rotation and was even considered the unofficial sixth starter at times. He averaged 6.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting nearly 50% from the field and over 40% from beyond the arc. His performance earned him a spot on the All-Rookie Second Team and helped propel OKC to a playoff run.

In his exit interview, Wallace jokingly apologized for his initial negative opinion of Oklahoma, admitting that he had misjudged the state. He now sees that there are plenty of things to do in OKC and has embraced his new home. With his continued development, Wallace has the potential to become a quality 3-and-D starter for the Thunder.

Wallace’s success adds to the Thunder’s track record of draft successes in the lottery range, and they will have another opportunity to add to that list in the upcoming 2024 NBA draft with the No. 12 selection. If Wallace continues on his current trajectory, he may have a long and successful career in Oklahoma City
