From Cops to Chums: The Rise of Offload Cumbria and Its Success in Combining Mental Health Support with Physical Activity

Liam Edmondson, the founder of Offload Cumbria, recognized the need for a different approach to mental health support after his own struggles with complex PTSD and anxiety disorder. In 2020, he established the peer support group as a free talking group for men in Penrith and Carlisle, providing a safe space for men over 18 who are struggling with mental health issues.

Now, Offload Cumbria has expanded to include activity-led sessions that have been popular among participants. The group aims to provide a holistic approach to mental health care that addresses both emotional and physical wellbeing by combining traditional talking support with engaging activities like bowling and axe throwing.

To continue funding these activities for the next two years and support more men in need, Offload Cumbria is working to raise £2,000. Edmondson emphasizes the importance of this approach in improving overall wellbeing by offering a positive distraction and creating a conducive environment for open conversations about mental health. By incorporating activities into their support sessions, Offload Cumbria hopes to offer a unique opportunity for individuals to come together, connect, and engage in positive experiences that can increase happiness and build connections within the community.
