From Coffee Spill to Krav Maga Victory: A Woman’s Story of Self-Defense and the Importance of Being Prepared

Connecticut woman highlights the physical and mental health benefits of practicing Krav Maga

A Connecticut woman shared her story of survival and emphasized the importance of being prepared in vulnerable situations. Kimberly Bedoya, a resident of Trumbull, takes classes in Krav Maga at Breakthru Fitness in Stamford. Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art used for self-defense.

Bedoya credits her Krav Maga classes with giving her the confidence to defend herself effectively. In 2023, she was driving home from work when she spilled coffee on herself and got out to clean it up. As she was bending over, a man approached her, offering help but then trying to grab her from behind. Drawing on her training, Bedoya was able to kick and push him away before fleeing in her car.

Her instructor, Tom Bacha, praised Bedoya’s quick actions and emphasized the importance of mental and physical training in handling such situations. He stressed that assessing each situation is crucial and knowing when to fight back or when to remove oneself from danger is key to staying safe. Bedoya believes that even a little knowledge can make a difference in staying safe.

The experience has reinforced Bedoya’s belief in the value of training for self-defense. She plans to continue taking Krav Maga classes at Breakthru Fitness and encourages others to do the same.
