Local Sports Moments Revisited: A Look Back in Time

In this retrospective of regional sports, we delve into some of the most iconic moments that have shaped the athletic landscape in this area. One such moment was a thrilling win for the top-ranked B-Mets, led by Scott Hunter. Despite being on a 0-for-13 slump, Hunter delivered a clutch two-run double in the eighth inning, sparking a six-run comeback that propelled the Binghamton Mets to a 10-9 victory over Norwich, Conn. This triumph improved their record to 18-11 and helped them maintain their position as leaders in the Eastern League’s Northern Division. Hunter, an experienced outfielder who was unexpectedly assigned to Double-A, also hit a two-run home run in the first inning, lifting his batting average from .203 to .226.

On the same day, Vestal senior D.J. Wiggins demonstrated his talent with an impressive performance in a spot start for his high school baseball team. He pitched a two-hitter and recorded an impressive 16 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over Corning East. Wiggins also drove in the lone run of the game with a single in the second inning. Despite allowing singles in the first and seventh innings, Wiggins maintained his dominance on the mound, striking out the final batter with bases loaded to secure the win. His coach, Tank Anderson, praised his outstanding performance, noting that Wiggins had not pitched for over two weeks prior to this game.
