Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair: Igniting a Passion for Science and Innovation in Young Minds

Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair held at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) on Thursday (April 11) attracted students from Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, and Hope. These students showcased their science projects to the public and judges with an opportunity to win cash and prizes.

Avneet Singh Sandhu, a Grade 5 student from Dasmesh Punjabi School in Abbotsford, was one of the participants. His project focused on plant photosynthesis. However, there was a wide range of topics explored by other students. The selection process began in-class where five projects were initially chosen from each class and later narrowed down to three final projects that were presented at the science fair.

Grade 4 student Gurnihaal Singh Bains shared his surprise at making it through the first round, highlighting the competitive nature of the event. Grade 8 students Japandeep Gill and Metaab Khangura expressed their eagerness to advance to the national level after their project idea for a sensor to help drivers find parking spaces in busy lots inspired by a missed flight at Vancouver International Airport impressed judges.

The science fair aimed to ignite a passion for science and innovation among young scientists in Fraser Valley schools. The creativity and dedication of these students were evident in their projects on display at UFV. All participants eagerly awaited the awards ceremony on Wednesday (April 17) to find out how they fared in the competition.

Overall, it was a great opportunity for these young scientists to showcase their skills and talent while also learning more about science and technology through hands-on activities and experiments.

In conclusion, Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair is an excellent platform for young scientists from different schools to come together and share their knowledge with others. This event not only provides an opportunity for these students to win cash and prizes but also encourages them to pursue careers in STEM fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
