Fourth Time’s the Charm: Cigarettes Cheaper on Brink of Closing Due to Persistent Theft and Vandalism in Richmond District of San Francisco

In the Richmond District of San Francisco, a family-owned business is considering shutting down after being broken into and vandalized for the fourth time. Cigarettes Cheaper, which has been operating since 2003, has become the victim of multiple thefts according to Bashir, the store’s owner.

Bashir expressed his frustration with the continuous break-ins, which have been happening since 2020. Police have observed possible suspects entering cars and fleeing the scene, even hitting a marked police vehicle in their haste. Despite their efforts, one car was found abandoned on the 300 block of 17th Ave and a firearm and potentially stolen items were discovered. However, no arrests were made.

The constant thefts have taken a toll on the store’s finances as Bashir mentioned the rising costs of rent, employee wages, and now the need to repair damages. The store had already invested in interior fencing to deter break-ins but thieves recently rammed through it with a car causing extensive damage. The estimated costs of stolen items and repairs are in the tens of thousands with no insurance coverage available due to the high crime rate in the area.

With no insurance to cover losses and financial strain continuing to grow, Bashir is contemplating closing shop permanently. The ongoing thefts have made it difficult for business to turn profit and owner is frustrated with lack of support from insurance companies and law enforcement.
