Fortum and Jyväskylä join forces to develop a data center complex

Fortum and Jyväskylä to collaborate on data center project expected to generate 150-200 new jobs

In a joint effort, Fortum and the city of Jyväskylä have agreed to develop a data center complex in the Seppälänkanka area. Covering approximately 20 hectares, the project aims to create job opportunities for 150-200 individuals.

The partnership between Fortum and Jyväskylä was driven by several factors, including the availability of skilled workers from nearby universities. Additionally, Jyväskylä’s reliable electricity grid, established district heating network, and commitment to carbon-neutral energy production made it an attractive location for the data center complex.

Fortum’s Business Director, Vesa Maso, emphasized these factors in a statement announcing the project. “We are excited about this opportunity to bring economic growth and innovation to the Seppälänkanka area,” Maso said. “The city of Jyväskylä has demonstrated its commitment to creating a supportive environment for businesses and we look forward to working with them on this exciting project.”

This project follows Fortum’s successful development of similar areas in Espoo and Kirkkonummi as part of the Espoo Clean Heat project in collaboration with Microsoft. The partnership between Fortum and Jyväskylä is expected to bring economic growth and innovation to the area, benefiting both the local community and businesses involved.

One of the main reasons why Jyväskylä was chosen as a location for this data center complex is its proximity to universities that provide highly skilled workforce. This new data center complex will cover approximately 20 hectares in Seppälänkanka area.
