Formula 1 Champion Mika Häkkinen Selling Rare McLaren P1 Validation Prototype with Exclusive Driving Course

Purchase the McLaren P1 previously owned by double-F1 world champion Mika Häkkinen

Mika Häkkinen, a two-time Formula 1 world champion, is the current owner of a rare prototype McLaren P1 Validation Prototype 3 (VP3). The car, which has been used for durability testing, is being sold at Bonhams’ sale in Monaco on May 10. As part of the sale, Häkkinen will provide a one-day driving course to the winning bidder at their location of choice. The estimated price for the car ranges between $1.2 million and $1.5 million.

McLaren built only seven of these so-called validation prototypes, and Häkkinen’s car is the only one to have gone to auction thus far. A booklet detailing test notes and other information collected during the development phase will be included in the sale. This was Häkkinen’s first road-going McLaren, and he chose the black color scheme with orange accents in Papaya hue himself through McLaren’s MSO department. There is no mention of how many miles the car has covered.

The P1 was launched early last decade as one of the Holy Trinity of electrified hypercars along with Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. A successor with a similar powertrain and possibly gullwing doors is expected later this year.
