NFL veteran Pharoh Cooper, a former wide receiver and kick returner, has announced his retirement after playing in the league for seven seasons. In a social media post, Cooper expressed his gratitude to God for allowing him to live out his childhood dream of playing in the NFL. He also thanked his family, friends, and fans for their love and support throughout his career.
Cooper was originally drafted by the Rams in the fourth round in 2016 out of South Carolina. In his second season with the team, he quickly became a standout returner, earning first-team All-Pro honors and leading the NFL in kickoff return average with 27.4 yards. However, a season-ending ankle injury in 2018 led to his release from the Rams.
Despite struggling to regain his earlier form with subsequent teams, Cooper had stints with the Rams, Cardinals, Bengals, Panthers, Jaguars, and Giants throughout his career. Although he made a decision to retire at age 29, foregoing an opportunity to potentially earn a spot in an NFL training camp this year.
The league’s increased focus on finding skilled returners with the new kickoff rule could have opened a door for Cooper; however, he chose to leave the game on his own terms.
Cooper’s retirement marks the end of an era for him as he steps away from professional football after achieving many milestones during his time in the league. He will always be remembered as one of the most talented kick returners in recent years and will continue to inspire others to follow their dreams.
