Former NBA Player Faces Felony Charges in Alleged Sports Gambling Scandal

Jontay Porter, ex-Raptors center, accused of involvement in federal gambling operation

In recent news, former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter has been charged with felony offenses related to an alleged sports gambling operation. The charges, filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn, have already led to the arrest of four other individuals involved in the scheme. Despite this, no arrest warrant has been issued for Porter yet, according to a spokesperson for the United States Office of the Eastern District of New York.

Last month, four men were indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud a sports betting company, with Porter being identified as Player 1 in the criminal complaint detailing the alleged scheme. In April, the NBA banned Porter for his involvement in a betting scandal, accusing him of intentionally manipulating his performance in games to allow others to profit from bets placed on specific prop bets involving him. Additionally, it was found that Porter had also placed bets on NBA games himself.

According to the complaint, Porter saw an opportunity to clear his significant gambling debts by assisting others in winning bets placed on him. He informed one of the defendants that he would fake an injury during a January 26 game after sustaining an eye injury during a previous game with the Raptors. Despite playing only four minutes in that game, Porter’s actions allowed the bettors to win over $1 million on prop bets involving him, including an $80,000 parlay that resulted in a $1.1 million win. Similarly, he informed the group chat that he would leave a March 20 game early due to illness and played just three minutes against Sacramento Kings’ team. This allowed them again to win over $1 million on prop bets involving him
