Food Deliverers in Brussels Stage Strike for Fair Pay and Employment Status: Press Release

Uber Eats food delivery drivers to go on strike next week

Uber Eats food deliverers in Brussels are planning to strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to a press release from The House of Deliverers. The group, which represents couriers across Belgium, is calling for an increase in pay of at least 2 euros per trip and 0.5 euros per kilometer traveled. They say their fees have not been raised since 2019 despite a 20 percent inflation rate.

In addition to demanding better pay, the couriers are also criticizing Uber for not consulting with them on their employment status and the government’s lack of action in this area. Despite a ruling by the Brussels labor court last year that meal deliverers should be considered employees, there has been no change in their status. The strike is expected to involve “several hundred” couriers in Brussels and other cities like Ghent, Liège, and Antwerp.

The House of Deliverers has called on Uber to consult with them about their employment status, but they have yet to receive a response from the company. The strike action aims to bring attention to the issues faced by food deliverers and push for better working conditions and fair pay. Strike actions are planned for Tuesday and Wednesday, with a campaign also scheduled at Uber’s Belgian headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday.
