Fog in Airplane Cabins: A Natural Phenomenon Explained by Experts

What causes fog to form inside airplanes?

As the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) explains, hot and humid air from outside meets cold air inside blown out from the air conditioning vents, resulting in temporary fog inside airplane cabins. This phenomenon was captured in a video posted by TikTok user Savannah Gowarty, which received over 13.1 million views on a US domestic flight. The video sparked confusion among many viewers who were unsure of what they were seeing. However, experts reassure that this occurrence is natural and nothing to worry about.

Climate scientist Indrani Roy from the University of London explains that condensation occurs when water vapor in the air comes into contact with cooler hard surfaces, which are abundant inside an aircraft. This is why cabin surfaces may appear wet when fog forms inside airplane cabins. While this may make passengers nervous, especially if they mistake it for smoke, flight attendants are trained to provide explanations and reassure passengers.

The fog in the cabin usually dissipates quickly because the cooler air warms up above the dew point, causing the fog to disappear within seconds. According to Roy, while there is no harm caused by this natural phenomenon, passengers should not be concerned as it is common in certain conditions.

Overall, while fog in airplane cabins may be disconcerting at first glance, it is a temporary and safe occurrence that does not pose any risk to passengers or crew members alike.
