Florida Medicaid Managed-Care Program Awards Tens of Billions in Contracts to Health Plans, Covering Millions of People

The AHCA chooses five managed care health plans for Medicare program participation

In a major development, the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration has selected five health plans to participate in the state’s Medicaid managed-care program. These contracts, estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars in the coming years, will provide healthcare coverage to approximately 3.45 million people, according to information on the agency’s website.

The health plans that have been awarded contracts include Florida Community Care, Humana Medical Plan, Simply Healthcare Plans, Sunshine State Health Plan, and South Florida Community Care Network (also known as Community Care Plan). According to the agency’s website, Humana, Simply Healthcare and Sunshine State Health Plan will receive statewide contracts while the other two will receive contracts in specific regions of the state.

The procurement process for these contracts has been ongoing for over a year with 11 plans responding to an invitation to negotiate in an effort to secure a contract. Those that were not awarded contracts have the option to file challenges. The Agency is mandated by law to undergo a procurement process for these contracts every six years.
