Floating Environmental Education Center in Yonkers Promotes Urban Sustainability and Social Justice

Science Barge on the Hudson Now Open for the Season: Come Visit on the Water!

The Science Barge in Yonkers, NY is a floating environmental education center that has been on the waterfront since 2008. This interactive learning space, run by Groundwork Hudson Valley, is a prime example of urban sustainability. It runs entirely off the grid through solar panels, wind turbines, rainwater catchment, and biodiesel.

The Science Barge promotes environmental sustainability and social justice by teaching local residents how to be more climate-resilient and safe during extreme weather events. It also showcases alternative growing techniques in a built environment. Visitors can learn firsthand about the innovative technologies and environmentally sustainable methods used to grow fresh produce and herbs on the barge.

The barge’s off-the-grid system powers a soil-less hydroponic system that grows a variety of vegetables and herbs year-round with zero net carbon emissions, zero pesticides, and zero runoff. This allows for sustainable farming practices that conserve water and nutrients while reducing waste.

The Science Barge is located at 99 Dock Street on the Yonkers waterfront and is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. To learn more about this unique environmental education center or Groundwork Hudson Valley, visit their website for additional information. Additionally, a $100K Key Bank Award will allow the youth conservation group to continue growing and expanding their impact on the community.
