Finland’s Gift Tax: Focused on Generational Changes and Pre-Inheritance

Every year, billions of gifts are taxed in Finland

In Finland, gift tax is primarily focused on generational changes and pre-inheritance. The majority of gift tax is paid on real estate, companies, and various investment instruments. According to Statistics Finland, the total value of taxable gifts received by recipients in 2020 was approximately 1.85 billion euros. During that year, over 20,200 recipients received gifts from around 15,600 gift givers. The average taxable gift value was approximately 91,500 euros, with a median value of 23,000 euros, indicating that some gifts were quite substantial.

In comparison to inheritance tax in the same year which was inherited with a value of approximately 6.1 billion euros by over 145,600 individuals Gift tax thus represents a smaller portion of total taxes.
