Finland’s Gasum Ditches Russian LNG Amid New Sanctions: Focusing on Alternative Sources for Gas Needs”.

Gasum Brings Russian Gas to Finland During War, Ending Soon

In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland’s state-owned company Gasum has announced that it will cease importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia in July. This decision comes in response to new sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia, which prohibit the import of Russian LNG into terminals not connected to the gas network.

Gasum had been importing LNG from Russia since the war began in February 2022, and had a long-term procurement contract with Gazprom, the Russian state gas company. However, with the new sanctions in place, Gasum will end its LNG purchases from Gazprom and instead focus on sourcing gas from other countries.

The European Union’s sanctions also prohibit ship-to-ship transfers of Russian LNG in EU ports. This means that Gasum’s imports of Russian LNG to Finland’s Tornio and Pori terminals, which only serve local industry, will no longer be allowed.

Gasum’s director of communication and responsibility, Olga Vaisänen, stated that the company will comply with the sanctions and cease importing LNG from Russia. She assured customers that gas delivery will continue as usual even after the sanctions take effect, and that Gasum can supply gas from other sources, including Norway and Central Europe.
