In the last two countries in the world, Pakistan and Afghanistan, poliovirus remains endemic. To combat this disease, Pakistan launched an eradication campaign back in 1994. Since then, progress has been made with only five cases reported so far this year. However, the fight against polio continues.
The Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme administers over 300 million doses of oral vaccine annually with the help of around 350,000 vaccinators. But health workers and security officials involved in vaccination campaigns face challenges and dangers on a regular basis. They are frequently harassed, ridiculed, threatened, and even physically targeted. Tragically, at least 102 health workers have lost their lives while carrying out their duties.
Apart from the threats and attacks faced by health workers, they also struggle with other issues such as low pay, salary delays, and tough working conditions. Some workers earn as little as 1,360 rupees (approximately $5) for an eight-hour day. Furthermore, polio survivors who work on the eradication campaign do not receive any transport or health benefits despite their condition. This leaves them to navigate challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions as they carry out their important work.
Despite these challenges, the fight against polio continues in Pakistan with determination and dedication from all stakeholders involved in the campaign. The government has set up a task force to ensure that all children receive adequate immunization coverage to prevent further spread of the disease.
