FIFA’s Revolutionary Move: The Women’s Club World Cup to Begin in 2026, with Detailed Participation Plans Announced

Women’s Club World Cup set to begin in 2026 as confirmed by FIFA

FIFA has announced that the first edition of the Women’s Club World Cup will be held in January-February 2026. The tournament, which will feature 16 teams, will be held every four years. This decision was made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who shared his plans in May 2021 to introduce the Women’s Club World Cup as a way to “revolutionize” the female game.

During the FIFA Council meeting, details about the tournament were not provided, but it is likely that top European teams from the UEFA Women’s Champions League will participate, as well as clubs from countries where women’s football is less developed. Teams like Barcelona could potentially participate in the tournament.

In addition to announcing the Women’s Club World Cup, FIFA also approved a new calendar aimed at providing more rest and recovery opportunities for players and coaches. FIFA President Infantino believes that these changes will enhance competitiveness in women’s football globally.

The FIFA Council also officially appointed Mattias Grafstrom as the FIFA Secretary General. Grafstrom had been nominated on an interim basis in October of last year and expressed pride and a sense of responsibility in accepting the position, citing his lifelong passion for football and the significance of his role in his professional life.
