FIFA’s Expansion of Club World Cup: A Concern for Player Unions and Their Well-Being

Legal challenge by players looms for overloaded and unworkable 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

FIFA’s decision to increase the number of teams in the Club World Cup from seven to 32 has raised concerns among player unions. The 32-team event scheduled for June-July 2025 is expected to place increased physical and mental demands on players, who already have a packed calendar. FIFPRO Europe, along with other player associations, has criticized the new format of the tournament, arguing that it shows a lack of consideration for the health and well-being of the players.

FIFA has defended the timing of the event, stating that it will take place during the offseason for many major leagues, allowing players to have sufficient rest. However, top players will face three consecutive years of major competitions during this time, with Euro 2024 Championship and Copa America scheduled for this year and next World Cup in 2026. This added competition is seen as exacerbating an already strenuous schedule by player unions.

FIFPRO Europe President David Terrier has emphasized the importance of respecting the fundamental rights of players and ensuring that their well-being is not compromised by excessive competition demands. With these concerns in mind, player unions are calling for FIFA to reconsider its plans for expanding the tournament in future years.
