Fiber for Peace: Cellcom’s Advanced Network Connects Israel’s Border with Jordan

Is cutting underwater cables in the Red Sea the answer to safeguarding our internet from the Houthis?

Cellcom’s advanced terrestrial fiber network will soon connect the border crossings with Jordan from north to south. This will not only allow for the connection of server farms and landing stations at strategic locations along the new fiber route, but it will also provide improved connection speeds for residents in the south and Eilat.

The deployed fiber, made of Corning glass, has the capability to transmit higher rates over longer distances. This means that thousands of gigabytes can be transferred over hundreds of kilometers. The infrastructure will be used by international content and cloud providers, communication operators, and entities interested in enhancing their existing infrastructures.

In addition to providing faster connection speeds, this network will support the transfer of information at rates higher than those available via international media. It will also serve as a backup for submarine cable infrastructure.

Communications Minister Shlomo Karai has stated that the deployment of Cellcom’s advanced terrestrial fiber between Eilat and Be’er Sheva is part of the solution to security threats in the region. The launch of this new fiber network is expected to benefit Eilat and the southern region of Israel by providing a secure infrastructure that connects the East to the West.

Director General of the Ministry of Communications, Einbal Meshash, emphasized that this deployment makes Israel a strategic asset in global data traffic.
