On Tuesday, FEMA, the Michigan State Police Homeland Security Division, and the Small Business Association began assessing the damage in affected areas of Oakbrook Estates in Portage. The mobile home sits on top of a car, indicating the severity of the damage caused by tornadoes.

Mark Peterson, External Affairs Director for FEMA Region 5, stated that agencies are investigating the extent of the impacts and gathering information to understand what occurred during the storms. This assessment is critical to initiate the process for federal and state assistance. However, having insurance is emphasized as the most crucial aspect of recovery for those affected by storm damage.

Lauren Thompson, Public Information Officer for MSP Homeland Security Division, stressed that having insurance during disasters is essential. FEMA is expected to remain in Oakbrook Estates until Friday. Peterson mentioned that if state officials determine that the situation is beyond their capacity, they may request federal assistance from FEMA. Then, FEMA will make a final decision based on their evaluation of the damage caused by tornadoes.
