In preparation for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2024, authorities are planning to increase police presence at cricket watch parties. The FBI’s Nassau County office is working closely with the NYPD and other local law enforcement agencies to enhance security measures. This comes after a pro-ISIS outlet posted a threatening graphic featuring the host venue Eisenhower Stadium, located about 25 miles east of New York City, along with a foreboding message.
The image included a depiction of the stadium and drones flying overhead, with text warning, “You wait for matches and we wait for you” on June 9. While there is no specific evidence of a plot targeting the World Cup or a particular game on that date, the ISIS symbolism in the graphic is cause for concern.
According to a senior law enforcement official, the intelligence assessment suggests that ISIS is hoping to incite violence by spreading its propaganda. The organization thrives on chaos and may be looking to inspire attacks during the tournament. The official noted that given the large crowds expected at the Nassau County stadium during the World Cup, especially for the June 9 game between India and Pakistan, law enforcement must be prepared for potential threats.
