Farewell to a Titan: The Departure of Giroud Leaves AC Milan with a Void and Uncertainty.

Milan captain says Giroud’s leadership will be missed as he heads to LA

On Wednesday, AC Milan captain Davide Calabria expressed his thoughts on the departure of veteran French striker Olivier Giroud to Major League Soccer. He acknowledged that this move would create a void in leadership at the seven-time European champions.

Giroud, who has been with Milan for three years, will play his final match for the club in a post-season friendly against Roma in Perth on Friday. The 37-year-old striker has been an integral part of Milan’s successes, including their 2022 Serie A triumph. His contributions to the team will be remembered as he departs for Los Angeles FC and retires from international football for France after the Euros.

Despite missing American midfielder Christian Pulisic and winger Rafael Leao on their tour squad, Giroud has made the long journey to Australia to say goodbye to his teammates and fans. Milan fans have given him a heartfelt farewell after he scored a goal in a 3-3 draw with Salernitana last Saturday. Calabria acknowledged Giroud’s importance not only on but off the field and praised his leadership qualities off the pitch.

Milan is also undergoing changes as they look for a new coach after finishing second in Serie A. Stefano Pioli, who had one year left on his contract, departed after four and a half years in charge. There are reports that Lille coach Paulo Fonseca might replace him, although Calabria expressed uncertainty about this move. Assistant coach Daniele Bonera will take over in Perth but was expected to lead the under-23s next season.

Roma finished sixth in Serie A and will be without several key players for the friendly match, including top striker Romelu Lukaku who is reportedly set to return to his parent club Chelsea.
