Falcons Fined and Lost Draft Pick for Tampering during Free Agency Negotiations

Falcons show interest in free agent Charlie Woerner

The Atlanta Falcons faced consequences on Thursday for tampering with free agents during the offseason. The team was found to have communicated impermissibly with three free agents, including former 49ers tight end Charlie Woerner, after legally agreeing to terms on a deal with their free agents. The violations occurred during the legal negotiating window.

As a result of the tampering, the Falcons lost a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and received a $250,000 fine. General manager Terry Fontenot was also fined $50,000. In addition to Woerner, the Falcons were found to have tampered with former Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney and former Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. The Falcons signed Woerner to a three-year, $12 million deal this offseason.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to NFL rules and regulations regarding free agency negotiations. Tampering can result in significant penalties for teams and individuals involved in the infractions. It is crucial for teams to follow the guidelines set forth by the league to avoid any consequences for improper conduct during the free agency process.
