Facial Recognition Technology: Peel and York Police Partner to Enhance Public Safety

Facial recognition technology now being utilized by York and Peel police

In recent news, both Peel and York police have implemented facial recognition technology as part of their investigative tools. This decision was made after consultations with the province’s information and privacy commissioner to ensure compliance with regulations.

Peel police have stated that the new technology will streamline their image comparison process by automating certain tasks. Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich emphasized that the system will only scan and compare against lawfully-collected digital evidence already stored in their databases. This will not only enhance criminal investigations but also improve the efficiency of mugshot searches, reducing human error and enhancing safety in Peel Region. The images used in Peel police’s existing mugshot database have been stored in accordance with legal guidelines, and the technology will not be used to scan or compare against live footage from external sources.

On the other hand, York police clarified in their own news release that images will not be collected from social media or CCTV footage as part of the facial recognition program. York police chief Jim MacSween highlighted the importance of collaborating with Peel Regional Police to enhance public safety in both jurisdictions. Recognizing that criminals do not limit their activities to a single area, this partnership is seen as a cost-effective way to expand resources and capabilities for both police services.
