Facial Recognition Technology: Enhancing Peel and York Police Investigations for Safer Communities

York and Peel Police Departments Implementing Facial Recognition Technology

Peel and York police have announced that they are now using facial recognition technology as part of their investigations. The move was made after consultations with the province’s information and privacy commissioner. Peel police will be using the technology to automate parts of their current image comparison process, while York police will not be gathering images from social media or CCTV footage as part of the program.

This new system will scan and compare against lawfully-collected digital evidence stored in their databases, greatly supporting criminal investigations and running mugshot searches faster with less human error. This will increase safety in Peel Region, according to Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich.

Both police services are confident that the use of facial recognition technology will be a valuable tool in their investigations and contribute to the safety of their respective communities. Consultations with the information and privacy commissioner demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that this technology is used responsibly and in compliance with privacy laws. By leveraging this technology, Peel and York police are embracing innovation to enhance their abilities to solve crimes and apprehend criminals efficiently.
