Eye Protection in Fires: Combatting Damage and Reversing Complications

Potential eye damage from smoke in a fire

When a fire occurs, the smoke can have negative effects on the eyes. This can lead to burns of the conjunctiva and cornea, which can result in serious irreversible damage. The eyes are one of the most sensitive parts of the human body and can be easily damaged by environmental factors, such as heat and chemicals.

Dr. CKII Bui Thi Kim Oanh from Viet Nga International Eye Hospital explained that there are three types of burns that can occur during a fire: burns caused by heat, chemicals, or a combination of both. The high temperatures and toxic gases in a fire can lead to mild or severe damage to the eyes. Patients may experience complications such as conjunctival burns, corneal burns, corneal scarring, and damage to the eyelid skin, which can lead to necrosis.

Eye complications from fires are usually not life-threatening but they can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. Burns in the eyes can also affect other organs in the body, such as the lungs, larynx, legs, and arms. To protect the eyes during a fire it is recommended to cover the face with a wet towel as a mask and wash the eyes with water immediately if a burn occurs.

For individuals exposed to fires, it is important to monitor the eyes for symptoms such as watery eyes or sensitivity to light which could indicate a burn. Seeking immediate medical attention at a specialized facility is crucial to prevent further damage and receive appropriate treatment. Timely treatment can help prevent eye damage or speed up recovery in case of damage.
