Extraordinary Nursing Care: SGMC Health’s DAISY Award Honors Compassionate Nurse Justin Parks

Healthcare organization SGMC recognizes Parks for outstanding nursing care with DAISY Award

Recently, the 3T Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at SGMC Health recognized Justin Parks as the recipient of the May DAISY Award. This honor was given to him in recognition of his exceptional nursing care and actions towards a patient and their family during end-of-life care. According to the nomination, the family opted for comfort care after deciding to withdraw intervention. Despite facing challenges, Parks made it possible for the patient to fulfill their desire to go outside after the ventilator was removed.

Parks’ compassionate and caring approach towards the patient’s son was particularly appreciated by the family. He answered questions, provided support, and ensured that everything the patient needed was readily available. The family was particularly touched by Parks’ efforts to fulfill their last request – going outside – which demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a positive attitude.

At SGMC Health, patients and colleagues are encouraged to nominate nurses who exhibit exceptional care and actions. The award committee considers several criteria when reviewing nominations, including compassion, teamwork, leadership, attitude, skills, and knowledge. Recipients of DAISY Awards receive a certificate recognizing them as “Extraordinary Nurses” along with a hand-carved sculpture called A Healer’s Touch from artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. The Flower Gallery provides a special floral arrangement of daisies as a local sponsor for SGMC Health’s DAISY Award program.
