In an effort to diversify tourism and promote wellness-focused travel, Portugal is developing a 3,000 km trail that will be the longest circular walking route in the world. The Palmilhar Portugal project aims to help underdeveloped regions benefit from tourism, especially outside of peak season. The trail will be suitable for walking and cycling, with some sections accessible to those with limited mobility.
While the full route may take years to complete in its entirety, the first section is set to open in Alenquer, just north of Lisbon, by the end of July. This initial section will pass through vineyards and towns before reaching the coast. Walkers will have access to an app and receive a physical passport to collect stamps along the way for memories.
Future sections of the trail will open in other regions of Portugal, such as Alentejo, central Portugal, and the Tras-Os-Montes mountains.
