Exploring the Millions: Florida’s Five New Medicaid Managed-Care Health Plans

AHCA chooses five managed care health plans for Medicare program participation

Five health plans have been selected by the state Agency for Health Care Administration to participate in the Medicaid managed-care program. The contracts, which will be worth tens of billions of dollars in the coming years, will provide health care to about 3.45 million people as of February, according to data on the agency’s website.

The five health plans chosen are Florida Community Care, LLC; Humana Medical Plan, Inc.; Simply Healthcare Plans, Inc.; South Florida Community Care Network, LLC operating as Community Care Plan; and Sunshine State Health Plan, Inc. A document on the agency’s website stated that Humana, Simply Healthcare, and Sunshine State Health Plan would receive statewide contracts, while the other two plans would receive contracts in specific regions of the state.

The contracting process has been ongoing for over a year now, with 11 plans responding to an “invitation to negotiate” to vie for contracts. Plans that do not receive contracts are able to file challenges. The agency is required to undergo a procurement process for the contracts every six years.
