Exploring the Implications of AI: The 8th Edition of El Aleph Festival

The eighth edition of El Aleph: Festival of Art and Science will be held from May 8 to 19 with the theme “Challenges of Artificial Intelligence and Other Intelligences.” Juan Ayala, technical secretary of Planning and Programming at UNAM Culture, described the event as a platform for dialogue, listening, and reflection on the impact of artificial intelligence tools across different disciplines of human knowledge. Over 255 participants will take part in more than 72 activities and 90 functions, including talks, workshops, plays, music, dance, and cinema.

The festival will feature visual conceptual art in various venues such as the Colegio de San Ildefonso and the Palace of Autonomy. The Colegio de San Ildefonso will host the major exhibition Face to Face for Mexico by Brian Eno. This exhibit will be presented for the second time in Latin America. Meanwhile, six exhibitions that use different artificial intelligence tools will be showcased at the Palace of Autonomy. Collaborations with the Ministry of Culture of Mexico City and the Colegio de San Ildefonso have facilitated these venue selections for festival activities.

One of the highlights of the festival is a film called Dwellers among waters powered by artificial intelligence that questions perennial human conditions through visual pieces. Another significant presentation is Gloria Contreras’ Mozart Requiem executed by UNAM Choreographic Workshop. The festival explores how AI technologies can be combined with storytelling expertise as well as different perspectives on AI in various spheres such as labor, economics, ethics, and interpersonal relationships.

The goal of this event is to enrich attendees’ understanding of artificial intelligence and its implications on society through a diverse range of activities and presentations by prominent scientists and artists from around the world. Renowned experts will discuss two polarized positions on AI – apocalyptic or integrated – across various areas such as engineering, education, medicine
