Exploring Scientific Knowledge and Creativity: A Look at Libby Middle High School’s Science Fair

Libby students showcase their scientific literacy talents

The annual Science Fair held at Libby Middle High School recently showcased the seventh- and eighth-grade students’ scientific knowledge and skills. This tradition has been running for about 20 years, allowing students to present their research and experiments to the community, fellow students, and teachers. Eighth-grade teacher Shannon Ostrowski and seventh-grade teacher Bill Moe shared some insights on this year’s fair.

Ostrowski mentioned that the eighth-grade projects were particularly impressive this year, as they allowed students to demonstrate their science literacy skills. Projects were judged based on three main criteria: scientific inquiry and experimental design, presentation skills, and creativity, neatness, and organization of the project display boards.

The top 10 projects from the eighth grade included a variety of topics such as thermodynamics, wind patterns, and chemical reactions. Some standout projects included “Eye Know Who!”, “Pop Goes the Boba”, and “Pepper Perception”. These projects showcased the students’ creativity and scientific knowledge.

Meanwhile, seventh graders focused on Montana’s history for their projects. They selected a Montana county and conducted research on various aspects of that county’s history. This included creating population graphs, essays, mascots, and colorful display boards. The event provided an opportunity for seventh graders to delve into Montana’s rich history while developing their research skills.

Overall, the Science Fair at Libby Middle High School was a success in promoting scientific inquiry while fostering creativity and critical thinking skills among middle school students.
