Exploring New Jersey’s Health Disparities: A Symposium on Black Maternal Health in Salem Shines a Light on the Need for Improved Medical Care

Salem County to Host Symposium on Maternal Health for Black Women

From Camden and Cherry Hill to Trenton and the Jersey Shore, New Jersey has many unique aspects of life that WHYY News wants to cover. We welcome any suggestions or topics you want us to explore.

On Saturday, a symposium on Black maternal health will take place at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Salem. This city, one of the poorest in New Jersey with limited access to health infrastructure, highlights the challenges faced by residents in finding adequate medical care, especially obstetricians. The nearest birthing center is located half an hour away at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill in Gloucester County.

Barbara George Johnson, vice president of external affairs and urban policy at the John S. Watson Institute for Urban Policy and Research at Kean University, emphasized the importance of hosting the event in Salem to bring attention to healthcare disparities. She noted that even in rural areas like Salem, the lack of healthcare resources mirrors the challenges faced in many rural areas across the country.

We invite our readers to share their thoughts and suggestions on what topics they would like us to cover in New Jersey.
