Expert Science Author and Educator Sparks Interest in Research and Revision with Interactive Presentations at Glenmont Elementary School

Visit from Science Author and Educator at Glenmont

Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen, a science author and educator, visited Glenmont Elementary School last week to conduct two presentations for students. The younger students, in grades K-2, learned about the anatomy of earthworms and the importance of revision in writing. To enhance their understanding, they were able to observe live worms in containers.

Meanwhile, the third through fifth-grade students focused on the research involved in nonfiction writing. Using examples from her book Dog and Cat Science Unleashed!, Dr. Wheeler-Toppen demonstrated how to use a research cycle strategy to guide information searches. This interactive session sparked interest among the older students, who saw research as a fun and essential part of the writing process.

The success of this event was made possible by Dr. Jodi Wheeler-Toppen, Glenmont Library Media Specialist Angela Datri, and the Glenmont PTA. The students and staff at Glenmont Elementary School were grateful for the opportunity to learn from an expert in science education and writing.
