Expert Panel to Advise State Officials on PFAS Health Risks and Exposure Assessments at 10 a.m. Meeting in Raleigh

Review of PFAS Effects by the Secretaries’ Science Board

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, state officials will gather in Raleigh to seek advice from a panel of experts on the Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board. The board, comprised of toxicologists, public health specialists, ecologists, engineers and related professionals, advises the Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services departments on existing PFAS health risk data.

During the meeting at the Archdale Building in Raleigh, the board will compare exposure assessments from the CDC and EPA to determine if communities have been exposed to certain substances in their environment. Exposure assessments measure the amount, frequency and duration of exposure to determine potential risks to human health.

The agenda also includes updates on a PFAS rulemaking package and recent peer-reviewed studies on PFMOAA, a unique PFAS found in North Carolina. Additionally, the board will address human health risk data related to 1,4-Dioxane in drinking water, a solvent used in manufacturing and found in trace amounts in certain consumer products.

For those unable to attend in person, the meeting can be listened to online through WebEx using the provided webinar number and password. For more information about the board and access to past meeting recordings, visit the website for details.
